Mealworm Life Cycle

Description

Mealworms, or larval darkling beetles, undergo a complete metamorphosis! They are easy to rear, making them great learning tools for students to learn about insect life cycles. Students learn to care for a mealworm and monitor their changes over several weeks.

This resource includes background information for teachers, instructional procedures, and an assessment plan.

Note: Some mealworms from PetCo are sprayed with juvenile hormones and unable to molt into adults. Avoid products advertised as “giant” or “superworms” if possible. There’s also a potential for death if they aren’t taken care of correctly, or kept in harsh conditions.
