Beetle, It’s Cold Outside

(1 review)

Description

Data Nuggets are NGSS aligned lesson-plans that build off of real-world research.

When soil temperatures drop below freezing (0℃), lady beetles go into a chill coma, or a temporary, reversible paralysis. When temperatures are below freezing, it is so cold that they are unable to move. When temperatures rise back above freezing, they wake from their chill comas. When lady beetles are in chill comas, they are easier for predators to catch because they can’t escape. They are also unable to find food or mates. Scientists can measure how fast it takes lady beetles to recover from chill coma, called chill coma recovery time, and use this as a measure of their performance.

Scientific Question: Does the amount of time lady beetles spend at freezing temperatures affect how long it takes for them to wake up from a chill coma? In both English and Español!

This resource is from DataNuggets, a fantastic series of lesson plans that are based on real-world research! Each Data Nugget comes with three student versions, based on the type of graphing skills required. Type A activities provide the graph for the students (allowing a focus on graph interpretation, making claims based on evidence, and explaining reasoning), Type B activities provide axis labels but requires students to graph the data, and Type C provides an unlabeled grid on which to draw a graph.

We strongly recommend all of the DataNuggets lesson plans! They have real data for students to draw conclusions from, and each comes with different levels, so you can customize for your classroom’s abilities. In particular we love the scaffolding of the graphing and data manipulation.
