In this lesson, students learn to determine whether an animal is an insect or a spider. Students are introduced to invertebrates and develop skills relevant to higher classification skills. We really like the use of a Venn diagram to compare/contrast insects and spiders, and there is a writing assessment prompt included.

This is a nice introduction to arthropods, with an emphasis on having students observe different animals, record their observations, and then work to decide what characteristics define each group. Great use of a Venn diagram!
