Vibrating Bumblebees

Description

This 3 minute film introduces students to buzz pollination, and the coevolutionary match between bumble bees and flowers.

Some flowers lock their pollen away, and it can only be released by a bee buzzing at the right frequency:  buzz-pollination. It’s critical to human agriculture. Tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants need wild populations of buzz pollinators, such as bumblebees, to produce fruit. Honeybees can’t do it.

This film would serve as a great introduction to coevolution, or as phenomena to discuss.
