Evolution Of Ant-Mimicking Beetles

(1 review)

Description

This resource is a published scientific figure exploring the evolutionary origins of the subfamily Aleocharinae. These beetles evolved to mimic ants and parasitize them. Students interpret a phylogenetic tree from published research to analyze patterns of convergent evolution. A handout guides them to take notes and explore.

This is a nice walkthrough of interpreting phylogenetic tables, which can be a bit overwhelming to students unfamiliar with them. We would like to see a bit more background for teachers, who also may not have worked with these tables before.

Accessibility Note: the table uses the color red; some students may have difficulty interpreting it.
