4-H Introduction To Entomology

Category: Tags: ,

This resource is a great introduction to beginning an insect collection. Produced for Mississippi State 4-H, it introduces the “how” and “why” of insect collecting, and important information needed to put together a collection. Ideas include the scientific names and binomial nomenclature (order, family, genus, and species), basic insect body structures, how to make collecting supplies like nets and kill jars, and how to pin insects in accordance with scientific standards. This resource includes diagrams of how to pin the different orders of insects that are easy to follow and understand, as well as how to spread the wings of certain insects (like butterflies) and point mount small insects like flies or ants.

Note that some of the language is not current. Proper utilization of this resource may require adjustments or additional research. This resource is also localized to Mississippi in some sections, but it should not impact the user experience.

This is a good, solid introduction to collecting insects, including details of how to build your own collecting equipment. Note that some terminology is not current (gradual metamorphosis, order/family names).
